The main GST slabs in India are:

  • 5% – Daily Needs and Basic Items
  • 12% – Special Products
  • 18% – Majority of Products & Services
  • 28% – Luxury and Expensive Items

1️⃣ CGST – Central Goods and Services Tax

CGST means the tax of the Central Government.

When it applies: When a transaction happens within the same state (Intra-state)

Who collects: Central Government

Example: If you buy a mobile in Gorakhpur and the seller is also in Gorakhpur, a part of the GST goes to the Central Government as CGST.

Tip: CGST always applies to sales within the state, and its rate is half of the total GST.
(For example, if Total GST = 18% → CGST = 9%)

2️⃣ SGST – State Goods and Services Tax

SGST means the tax of the State Government.

When it applies: Same as CGST, i.e., within the same state

Who collects: State Government

Example: In the mobile example above, the other part of GST goes to Uttar Pradesh as SGST.

Tip:
CGST + SGST = Total GST
If GST = 18% → CGST = 9% and SGST = 9%

3️⃣ IGST – Integrated Goods and Services Tax

IGST means Inter-state GST, i.e., between two different states

When it applies: When the seller is in one state and the buyer in another

Who collects: Central Government

Example: If the seller is in Mumbai and the buyer in Delhi, the full GST amount is paid to the Central Government as IGST.

Tip:
IGST = Total GST Rate (it is not split)
Later, the Central Government transfers a part of IGST to the respective state.
